Mostly sunny with chance of meteor showers… Met Office set to predict weather in space

The Met Office is taking one giant leap for weathermen as it gets set to provide forecasts for outer space.

Using a Unified Model, the Met Office can issue warnings of violent geomagnetic storms. Photo credit: Getty

It is also sharing its sophisticated tool with a second team of researchers to provide a ‘forecast’ for exoplanets beyond our solar system.

It means the Met Office can issue early warnings to Government bodies, airlines and the National Grid so they can take steps to minimise the impact of geomagnetic storms, which have the potential to wreak havoc on Earth.

The Met Office’s Dr David Jackson said: “Space weather can affect the aviation and power industries, as well as a whole range of activities that rely on GPS timing and positioning, radio communication or satellite-based observations.”

And forecaster for the Met Office Dave Britten told Yahoo! News: “It’s not going to be a sunshine and showers on Jupiter forecast. It’s mainly for research purposes to understand how different atmospheres interact with each other.

We can warn the government with the information we receive about solar weather, who will then be able to warn the public.”

The project to observe some of the 763 exoplanets outside our solar system for their atmospheric properties was presented at the National Astronomy Meeting today in Manchester.

Dr David Acreman, who is involved in the study, said: “It could be of vital importance in the interpretation of the wealth of observational data on extra-solar planets we expect to come within the next decade.”

He explained that the extreme conditions seen on exoplanets like 14 Andromedae b are ‘unlike anything seen on Earth’, but the Unified Model is capable of handling them.

The government has just announced a plan to spy on us all, to be pushed through “as soon as Parliamentary time allows”.

[1] They want to see details of who we call, text and email, and which websites we visit - without any kind of warrant or reason.

They want to force phone and internet companies to install special devices to provide all this data on each and every one of us.

[2] Experts are lining up to condemn this idea as intrusive, expensive and ineffective.

[3] But we know that when the Labour government announced similar plans a few years ago, a huge outcry was needed to make them to back down.

[4] So let's build a massive petition right away, to show David Cameron that British citizens simply won’t put up with the government spying on their every move.

Please click here to add your name now:
https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/stop-the-snooping-plan

A final version of the plan is due to be announced in just one month's time.

[5] We need to move fast if we're to get this scrapped before then. A big petition right now could persuade David Cameron to rethink before he commits too deeply. His officials will report the rising number of signatures to him. And they will warn him that he can expect voters to challenge him every step of the way.

MPs from different political parties are already expressing unease.

[6] One prominent Conservative MP, former shadow Home Secretary David Davis, has been in touch with the 38 Degrees office to say: "These plans would give the state huge new powers to snoop on ordinary people. They'd be expensive, unnecessary, and a huge invasion of everybody's privacy. If they are to be stopped, public pressure will be critical – including from 38 Degrees members".

Add your name to the petition today:
https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/stop-the-snooping-plan

David Cameron claims this will make us safer. But this is about spying on all of us, not serious criminals. It's already perfectly possible for the government to monitor people suspected of serious crimes, with proper permission and oversight.

[7] And serious criminals will inevitably find ways to hide their online identities.

Most importantly, this isn’t the kind of Britain we want to live in. We shouldn’t respond to criminals by abandoning our principles and scrapping basic civil liberties. We shouldn’t treat every citizen like a potential criminal who needs to be monitored. Help stand up for our right to privacy when we browse the internet or phone our friends - please sign the petition and spread the word now:

https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/stop-the-snooping-plan

Thanks for using your voice,

Marie, Cian, David, Hannah, Becky, James and the 38 Degrees

PS: This plan would be like demanding the Royal Mail keep a copy of every single letter it handles. It's exactly the kind of thing this government announced with a fanfare that they wouldn't do. If we let them get away with this, what comes next? ID cards? Long-term detention without trial? Sign the petition to put a stop to the government’s snooping plans now:

https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/stop-the-snooping-plan

PPS: 38 Degrees members have been voting on whether to continue our campaign to protect the NHS. 96% voted yes to continuing to campaign! You can read an update on what will happen next, here:

How to wash a toilet

How to wash a toilet

This was simply too much of a time saver not to share it with you.

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds.. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times This provides a 'power-wash' and rinse'.

6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Yours Sincerely,

The Dog

Astronomers claim to have found 'tens of billions' of rocky planets in our galaxy where life can exist

A handout released in 2010 by the European Southern Observatory shows an artist's impression of the atmosphere around a super-Earth exoplanet. A scan of small, cool stars in the Milky Way suggests our galaxy has "tens of billions" of rocky planets located like Earth in zones where life can exist, European astronomers say

NASA satellite image shows the Carina Nebula, a star-forming region in the Sagittarius-Carina region of the Milky Way that is 7,500 light years from Earth. A scan of small, cool stars in the Milky Way suggests our galaxy has "tens of billions" of rocky planets located like Earth in zones where life can exist, European astronomers say

A scan of small, cool stars in the Milky Way suggests our galaxy has "tens of billions" of rocky planets located like Earth in zones where life can exist, European astronomers say.

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) says it found nine "super-Earths" in a sample survey of 102 stars known as red dwarves.

"Super-Earths" are rocky planets -- as opposed to gassy giants -- that orbit their stars in the so-called Goldilocks zone, where the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold but just right to have the potential to nurture life.

In this balmy region, the planet is neither scorched nor frozen, and water can exist in liquid form.
The ESO team used a powerful 3.6-metre (11.7-feet) telescope, known by its acronym of HARPS, at their observatory in Chile's Atacama desert.

"Our new observations with HARPS mean that about 40 percent of all red dwarf stars have a super-Earth orbiting in the habitable zone where liquid water can exist on the surface of the planet," said Xavier Bonfils of the Observatory of the Sciences of the Universe in Grenoble, southeastern France.

"Because red dwarves are so common -- there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way -- this leads us to the astonishing result that there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone," he said in an ESO press release issued on Wednesday.

By ESO's estimate, there could be around 100 "super-Earths" in stars less than 30 light years from Earth.

In cosmic terms, such distances are just a flea jump, but they are an impossible gap for Man to bridge with current space technology.

A total of 763 exoplanets, the term for a planet in another solar system, have been found since the first was detected in 1995, according to the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia (http://exoplanet.eu/

After polio, Raghu Makwana lost his legs. He had to walk with the support of his hands.

A long time back, a few friends took a walk on the street with the inspiration to do a small act of kindness. After some searching, two of them saw Raghu arranging the shoes that people had left outside the temple. Given his condition, their first impulse was to do something for him, but when they conversed with him, they quickly realized that they were actually receiving a lot more than they could give him. Raghu's big-hearted devotion coupled with a sharp and street-smart intellect profoundly impressed them, so much so that they spoke about him to their nonprofit mentor Jayeshbhai, and ended up making him financially self-reliant.

Raghu's impluse of kindness is ever-present. One of his many kindness endeavors is the Tulsi project. Whenever he learns of a family (mostly in the slums nearby, the largest in the large Indian state of Gujarat) with some dispute or even violent abuse, Raghu courageously walks in to spread good cheer and gifts them a tulsi plant. Most of these are complete strangers. Sometimes he'll recite a prayer, sometimes he'll talk about wise saints, sometimes he'll share stories. Hearing hopeful messages from a young man without legs is quite transformative! When he leaves the holy Tulsi plant, people accept it as a blessing; and as they nurture the plant, and are reminded of its presence everyday, they sometimes grow in empathy. To date, he has given out more than 500 of these plants, one at a time.

Let alone folks in the slums, Raghu even attracts famous people. :) Once, a philanthropist gave a talk to the slum kids and described the experience of flying in a plane. A few weeks later, through wild serendipity, it so turned out that Spice Jet Airlines donated an entire plane for that whole group of slum children and young adults, including Raghu, to "fly in the air". Miss India herself received them at the airport, and personally chatted with Raghu about life in the slums, as they were all gifted a royal tour of a big city. Even more recently, when Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the former president of India, was giving a talk, he was so inspired by Raghu that he not only invited him on stage but also opened his talk with: "When I asked Raghu what is your dream in life, he said only one thing: 'I want to see the women of India and their children smile.' "

In Nadiad, during the 'I am the Change' film project, college students produced a video on him too:

Viraj_Raghu bhai.mov

http://youtu.be/nlQgC743org

As a Lok Mitra fellow for our Moved By Love posse, Raghu continues to shine his compassion quotient in creative ways. To start 2011, Raghu gave birth to one of his dreams. When he lived out on the streets, he often felt deeply moved by others on the streets who had even less than him. He made a vow to himself that he would return to serve them one day, and that day had arrived for him. He put together a team of five everyday folks, (one of whom is blind!), who would make small sacrifices in their own lives to support delivery of hand-cooked meals for some of the absolutely neglected people on the streets. They appropriately named it "Tyaag Nu Tiffin" (Food of Sacrifice). Everyday at 12:30PM and at 7:30PM, Raghu starts off on his hand tricycle to deliver the food. It's the same food he himself eats, but he won't eat it until he has finished his round of offerings.

In a recent feature in Times of India, Raghu notes: "I'm not doing anything great. I'm not on a mission to change the world. God has been very kind to me in my struggle to survive. Now it is my turn to repay the kindness by helping other needy human beings."

A Secret Scrolls #116

A Secret Scrolls message from Rhonda Byrne
Creator of The Secret

When we first learn The Secret it is a defining moment in our life. We realize that everything we have experienced in our life was an effect, and that we caused those experiences through our thoughts and feelings.

In one incredible moment we come face-to-face with the fact that we have been the cause of many good things in our life, but we have also unintentionally brought pain and suffering to ourselves. At the same time, we realize that the future is entirely in our hands, that every possibility can be realized, and that we can easily change anything and everything in our life - through our thoughts and feelings.

But this world we live in, with its dazzling special effects of people, circumstances, and events, can be a very distracting place, and if we don't practice what we've learned, the greatest discovery of our lives will slip through our fingers. With the loss of that discovery, our lives will fall back into negativity.

To ensure that this never happens to you, I wrote a new book. It's called The Magic.

In The Magic I disclose a piece of life-changing knowledge that is hidden within a two thousand-year old sacred text. Then, on an incredible, 28-day journey, I teach you how to apply this knowledge in your everyday life.

If you want your life to touch the stars and be breathtakingly magical, it can be. If you want to change anything in your life, know that there are no limits to what you can change it to... by putting the precious knowledge contained in The Magic into practice!

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that there are few tools more effective or more useful in achieving deep knowing, true joy, and inner peace than daily meditation.

It would be very beneficial to take 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening -- more if you can find it -- to be quiet with your Holy Self. Your consciousness can be dramatically expanded over a relatively short period of time with true dedication to such a gentle discipline.

Are you meditating regularly? Is it the first thing you cut out of your day if things start off, or begin to get, hectic? It should, of course, be the last thing.

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that when we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life,
or in the life of another.

Hellen Keller said that, and she was right. There is a situation in your life right now where you are being asked to do your best, your very best. Maybe it is in finding forgiveness for another. Or is understanding something that you just haven't been able to understand. Or in accepting what has to this point felt unacceptable.

Whatever that situation (and you know exactly what it is right now)...are you doing the best that you can? If you are, so be it, and good. Yet if you think you might do better, allow this little nudge today to be your gift from the soul. A miracle awaits if you will reach back now and do your very, very, very best in this.

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that to find beauty in everyone you must see beauty in everyone, then announce that you see it, for in announcing it, you place it there in their reality.

Do not miss a single chance -- not one single opportunity -- to tell someone how wonderful they are, how special they are, how important to you they are, how incredible as a person they are, how beautiful they are inside and out. Do not miss a single opening in which to insert such a comment, genuinely felt and genuinely meant.

Make it your life's mission today to bring to the attention of another just how extraordinary they are. Say it. Say it. SAY it. Their heart is waiting to know that their own best thought about themselves can be believed.

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that every action is either strong or weak, and when every action is strong we are successful.

Wallace D. Wattles said that, and he was right. You know when the action you take is strong, and you know when it is weak. You can tell in your stomach. Endeavor to take no weak action whatsoever.

Run away from it. Reject it. Go for the strong action, the strong choice, every time.

You know, by the way, what is meant by all of this. You have been weak in some of your choices and decisions, and you have been strong. You have been both in your life. But no more, right? Only strong from now on, yes?

And you know exactly why you received this message today.

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that what is important in your life is what you decide is important -- and this decision will indelibly create who you are.

When you awoke this morning, what was the first thing on your mind? On your list of Things To Do, what is #1? As you contemplate your current priorities, is there a person at the top, or is it some kind of doingness ...?

Only you can know what is catching your attention, what is calling to you for your energy. Yet you can ask yourself a key question...

Where is love in all of this?
.

You know, by the way, what is meant by all of this. You have been weak in some of your choices and decisions, and you have been strong. You have been both in your life. But no more, right? Only strong from now on, yes?

And you know exactly why you received this message today.

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that life offers you an amazing opportunity in every single moment to see and experience Who You Really Are.

Watch yourself this day. Just watch yourself. Look at what you are doing moment to moment...and why. Ask yourself in the midst of it, "What does this have to do with my real reason for being here? Is this what I have come all the way to the Earth to experience?"

If the answer is a resounding Yes, keep doing it. If the answer is No, ask yourself, "What in the world am I doing?" Look at the words and consider them literally. What-in-the-world-am-I-doing? What am I involved in every day, and what does this have to do with my soul? It's just a question...just a question...

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that you need not be concerned about money. Be concerned, instead, about joy.

How much joy are you experiencing in this moment? How much joy are you bringing to this moment?

The joy you experience will be the joy you bring. If you are waiting for joy to be brought to you, you do not understand what you are doing here. And if you think that joy has anything to do with money, you really do not understand what you are doing here.

There is a person waiting right now, right this very minute, for you to uplift them. Do that...and you will be rich.

Really. I mean, really. I'm not making this up.

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

...that it could seem like you are losing something right now, but do not be fooled. This is simply a turnaround orchestrated by your soul.

Even before this, you were. And even after all this passes away, you shall be. All the Rest Of It is stuff and nonsense. The accoutrement. The flora and fauna. Pretty, perhaps. Shiny and sparkling, perhaps.

But having nothing to do with anything.

Let it go. Release it. If it was not supposed to be removing itself from you now, it would not be doing so. It will never return to you in this exact form, and it is not intended to. If it returns at all, it will be in a higher form. That is the purpose of its leaving. All of life only improves itself. It can't do anything else.

This is called evolution. Trust it. And now, smile. Tomorrow is coming! Tomorrow is coming!

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that your job, your invitation from the Universe, is to give people back to themselves.

You can do this every day, in a hundred ways. Why not practice it with the first three people you encounter after reading this?

It is really a very easy thing to do -- yet it can affect a person mightily. All you have to do is look for the best in that person, and then show it to them, right then and there. Describe it. Admire it. Thank them for it.

Do this for three people every day and watch how your whole life can change. At last you will realize what you are doing here. All the rest will be just stuff and nonsense.

Love, Your Friend....

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know...

that it is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.

Laura Ingalls Wilder said that, and she was right. This seems such simple stuff, such simplistic knowledge, yet when we truly embrace it as our living reality, our day-to-day lives begin to change in very important ways.

So take a look today and this evening at what sweet, simple things of life you may be looking past, or right over, and neither seeing nor enjoying. Look closely. They are likely to be right in front of your face -- something you're looking through every day

It’s Not a Fairytale: Seattle to Build Nation’s First Food Forest

Thanks to Casey and Andrea, It’s Not a Fairytale: Seattle to Build Nation’s First Food Forest

Forget meadows. The city’s new park will be filled with edible plants,
and everything from pears to herbs will be free for the taking.

By Clare Leschin-Hoar February 21, 2012

http://www.takepart.com/article/2012/02/21/its-not-fairytale-seattle-build-nations-first-food-forest

Seattle’s vision of an urban food oasis is going forward. A seven-acre
plot of land in the city’s Beacon Hill neighborhood will be planted
with hundreds of different kinds of edibles: walnut and chestnut
trees; blueberry and raspberry bushes; fruit trees, including apples
and pears; exotics like pineapple, yuzu citrus, guava, persimmons,
honeyberries, and lingonberries; herbs; and more. All will be
available for public plucking to anyone who wanders into the city’s
first food forest.

“This is totally innovative, and has never been done before in a
public park,” Margarett Harrison, lead landscape architect for the
Beacon Food Forest project, tells TakePart. Harrison is working on
construction and permit drawings now and expects to break ground this
summer.

The concept of a food forest certainly pushes the envelope on urban
agriculture and is grounded in the concept of permaculture, which
means it will be perennial and self-sustaining, like a forest is in
the wild. Not only is this forest Seattle’s first large-scale
permaculture project, but it’s also believed to be the first of its
kind in the nation.

“The concept means we consider the soils, companion plants, insects,
bugs—everything will be mutually beneficial to each other,” says
Harrison.

That the plan came together at all is remarkable on its own. What
started as a group project for a permaculture design course ended up
as a textbook example of community outreach gone right.

“Friends of the Food Forest undertook heroic outreach efforts to
secure neighborhood support. The team mailed over 6,000 postcards in
five different languages, tabled at events and fairs, and posted
fliers,” writes Robert Mellinger for Crosscut.

Neighborhood input was so valued by the organizers, they even used
translators to help Chinese residents have a voice in the planning.

So just who gets to harvest all that low-hanging fruit when the time comes?

“Anyone and everyone,” says Harrison. “There was major discussion
about it. People worried, ‘What if someone comes and takes all the
blueberries?’ That could very well happen, but maybe someone needed
those blueberries. We look at it this way—if we have none at the end
of blueberry season, then it means we’re successful.”

Unusual Places to Stay

Unusual places to stay

Fire truck in Scotland

There is nothing about this converted 1956 fire truck that we don't love. It has an oak parquet floor from a Tudor mansion, slate from a snooker table to make the hearth, a huge Victorian double bed and a wood-burning stove. All in a cuddlesome little converted truck. Just one question... where's the loo? Ah! In an outhouse next to the main house. Phew!

Thomas the Tank Engine in Yorkshire

Does it count as train-spotting if you stay inside one? Full steam ahead to two converted train carriages in Yorkshire, with a well-equipped kitchen, shower and modern wooden flooring. Skipwith Common is also the largest wetland heath in the North of England, so say yes to your inner-geek and do a spot of bird watching while you're there.

Treehouse in France

When you were a kid, didn't you always dream of living in a treehouse? Well, now you can - for a few nights anyway. Montignac-de-Lauzun, in south-west France, is where you'll find a grown-up treehouse with a wrap-around balcony (boasting its own barbecue), an indoor shower, loo and cosy big bed.

Italian Watch Tower

Six-foot-thick circular stone walls and a breathtaking view of Italy's Positano Bay await you when you stay at the Torre Sponda. This romantic 13th century watch tower has a four-poster king-sized bed, fireplace and sea views, along with private access to the beach and a large sunbathing terrace.

Montreal

Launched this year, this new kid on the icy block is a little different from most other ice hotels as it's the only place in North America to get your urban igloo cool on. The Montreal Snow village is in the heart of the city in Jean Drapeau park, just a few minutes brisk walk away from the metro. Check out the hockey-themed room with its ice statue of a player at the end of the bed, and stadium seats.

“Let’s come together to change the world”

On Saturday December 11th, 2010 over 1,000,000 children gathered at Dhammakaya Temple, in Thailand, and sang a song, “Let’s come together to change the world”. At this occasion the children took a pledge to do good deeds and to be virtuous leaders. The gathering was in the context of a project for the moral revival of the world was created and initiated by Phrarajbhavanavisudh, the abbot of Wat Phradhamakaya. An impressive assembly. A real good will initiative.

THE SACRED GEOMETRY OF A NEW ERA
Aluna Joy - Father Earth - The Star Elders and Andean Masters.
Ollantaytambo, Peru - September 24, 2011

The following is the 6th and final message that we received in Peru, last September, on Equinox. You can find our other messages on our website at www.alunajoy.com under the "Articles for Personal and Planetary Transformation" link. It might be a good idea to read them in order as each message builds upon the previous one. We are sharing this message here with you just as we received it, in present time, with very little editing. We do this for a very important reason. We know the messages that we receive are not just for our groups, but are for others as well. The Andean Masters and the Star Elders assure me that the message and the corresponding energy will be transmitted to you. So as you read this, you might want to imagine that you are with us. Also, always view the photos on the website that we share, as photos also hold some energy of the sites. … P.S. We made a sacred site essence here. This was the only essence we were asked to make during the entire pilgrimage.

Ollantaytambo is sitting in a very unique geographical place. Three canyons and three rivers are coming to one point, and this creates an energy vortex. It is a sacred trinity. The mountain behind us is a solstice marker. When the sun rises on the solstice, it rises on one side of this mountain, and rises on the other side at the opposite solstice. Today, we are on the Equinox. So we are in that center point between the two solstices where the sun rises and sets . . . a balance in the trinity.

I will take a look now to see what is going on . . . . The first thing I see is that we are being rained upon by little droplets of light. I also see the face of a very big being. He is Father Earth. He recognizes us. He has been waiting for us. He is in control of nature. If you have noticed, the wind has changed direction three times now in just a few minutes. There is a blessing in this wind that is coming to us from all directions. It is blessing the center of who we are. He says that we are like rooted trees. We have anchored in a new world that is yet to be fully manifested. What we are being offered by Father Earth is the strength of a tree. No matter which way the wind blows in our lives, we will never lose our center. This blessing is giving us strength, centeredness and a perseverance to hold true to what we are inside of ourselves, no matter what. They are inviting us to anchor the roots of our base camp (read past messages about base camp) into this new earth.

The Andean Masters are now here and are offering us a new geometry that is the foundation for the new world. They are offering us (and to all those reading this) the gift of this new geometry to be encoded inside of us. You must give inner permission for this to take place. This is something that we may or may not see or understand at this moment, but as we take further steps into this new world, it will make sense. We are building a new world in stages. First we must envision this new world. We must create it in Spirit with our hearts and our minds. This part has already been completed. Next comes the process of making this vision a part of our physical world. This new geometry is the framework on which a new physical world will be built. This geometry is the building blocks to our future. Geometry is the framework; then comes sound as a frequency. Once that is done, our intent will begin to take hold.

The Andean Masters anchored the Earth's geometry here in Ollantaytambo. This was more evident when this site was active. It has been destroyed and dismantled, and it is ruin now. The locals tore up the walls to build the village here. In the past age, when the Andean Masters were living here, their core alchemy was based in geometry and solar alignments. What we are seeing now is a new geometry, and I expect, with the Earth having shifted by ten degrees this past year, that we will have a new solar alignment as well. Our minds are not wired to see this new geometry yet; but we will. This geometry is the basis for a new world that is being built inside of us as well. We are making the shift of the age; not only with the Earth, but with our human bodies as well. We have never done this before. It is a grand experiment that has been planned for a long time. All of us must go together as ONE, or we do not go at all. I think this is why we are feeling so compelled to gather in groups. Working as ONE helps us assimilate and anchor this new geometry which will help us bring this new world into being.

Speaking about working as ONE, in every one of our ceremonies during this journey, we have had no structure or rules. We simply sit down, and we start creating something together. That is what The Star Elders are talking about . . . we work as ONE, each equal, no one better, lesser, or more important than the other . . . all of us working together as a team; as ONE unit. I was just feeling the appreciation from the Star Elders as you were setting your sacred objects down. No one needed to ask if this was the right or wrong thing to do, because everyone was being respectful for each other's space and sacred items that they had placed down. This is the way the new world is going to operate. There won't be a structure; not the way we are used to anyway. There will be no rules; only truth and respect, and being aware of each person's sacred space.

There will be a new structure in the new world, but it won't seem like structure to us. It will feel like a great freedom to us. The other day Willaru was saying that there are less laws when we move up into the higher dimensions. The reason why there are less laws is because we will have become more self-aware and responsible; therefore we are allowed to have more freedom. Having less laws gives us more freedom to express our mastery and our natural, God-given talents. When we are less responsible, we can devolve as well. When we are less responsible, the universe literally takes care of us, by making more laws to keep us safe.

So this is how you make a new world with fewer laws . . . by being respectful for each other, and having that inner sense of knowing exactly what to do. We won't need government. We won't need regulations. We won't need techniques or processes anymore because we will be beyond that. We will be living from the heart.

So what the Andean Masters are giving us today, if we are willing to accept it, is our personal, awakened and empowered new level of free will. If we allow this blessing of this new sacred geometry into our spirit and body, this will be a new framework within us for our new dimension. This allows us to become a tree in a land that we don't understand yet; but we will. It takes courage to allow this.

Because we now have this new geometry inside of us, we have gone another step just now! That was quick! Now there is a pathway beginning to form out in front of us. It is not a solid path like you would walk on. It is sort of a new direction in and empty, undefined space. In the the last few months, we have not been able to see a direction at all. So this is awesome. I can't tell you which way it goes, because north, south, east and west do not work with what I am looking at. It is a new path in a new dimension. The Star Elders and the Andean Masters are telling me that, when we get home, we are going to find that some new and subtle doors have opened. These doors are ones that we did not expect and may not look particularly practical in our old mind set; but there will be doors.

Archangel Michael would like to help you SEE these doors, because they are rather subtle. If you ask him, he will tap you on the shoulder to get your attention, so you will not miss them. Once you see them, the Star Elders and the Andean Masters won't tell you what to do with them. They won't tell you where to go, or won't tell you how to do it. They will only help you discover the doors. It will be up to you if you decide to go through them or not. This is so because you are taking your first steps into being a living master.

OK . . . I don't even know how to explain this one but, I am going to do my best. Do you know the flower of life symbol? I see it spinning. But each flower petal is spinning, and it is making a different kind of matrix . . . a new fabric of time. It is like a fractal. They are saying that the flower of life, as we know it today, is the basis for our current 3-D world. It is now evolving into a bridge between an old geometry and a new one. It is brilliant like a rainbow laser light. The Star Elders and the Andean Masters are saying that they are weaving a new fabric of time with this geometry. This is really out there. I am sorry (Aluna laughs). They are telling me that this is brand new. It is a new fabric of time in space, and we will create a new dimension to place it into. The new world is actually starting to form in the physical. We have been creating and dreaming this world in Spirit for decades. So, for this to actually manifest as a physical foundation now . . . well . . . this could take years for this finish. BUT . . . the Star Elders burst in and said "No. It is NOT going to take a long time." Now that we have the vision put in place, it will happen very, very quickly now. They are not giving me a timeline, because time doesn't exist in the place they are talking from, but they say quickly. Knowing them so well, "quick" could be years, months, weeks, or tomorrow.

The best I could do with an image to show what I was seeing.

They are showing me the spinning flower of life matrix outlined in red and gold. There are little flowerets all spinning inside of themselves. The flowers were made out of gold, and inside was this red, kind of primal fire energy. It looks very three dimensional. It is all spinning down to a center point. There is a wormhole going through the middle of this matrix to someplace else. Inside of this wormhole, there is a lot of blue light. It is very beautiful. This spiraling down into this blue spot is the direction that they would like to take us. You need to give internal permission that this new direction be anchored into you. This will help give you a new compass in the outside world.

Remember . . . this new way might be something that you don't expect. It could be a surprise. But also remember that Archangel Michael will give you that little tap on the shoulder saying "That is it." Much of this new world will have an element of unexpectedness about it. It is the first step into a new era. When we arrive fully to the other side, we will be back in kindergarten again. We will be babies. We will get to be children again. We have all been working toward letting out our inner child. We will get to be children again in a world that has less laws and more freedom. In this new world, what we imagine, dream and conceive in our hearts can actually manifest. It won't be just a wild, wishful dream anymore.

When the Andean Masters lived here back in the era of Lemuria, they didn't have to eat unless they wanted to. They manifested with the alchemy of imagination for what they needed, and when they needed it. They planted flowers, and they played and functioned from One Mind and One Heart. All the miraculous things that we imagine or fantasize about that we think we can do, we will be able to do. With less laws, there can be the ability to do astonishing things . . . like astral project or bi-locate. What if you want to be in two places at once, or do fifty things at once? Can we do all that? They always tell me "Yes, you can." But it is crazy when we think about it in this dimension, because we can hardly keep up with our lives right now.

We all have these places inside of us where we feel stuck or jammed spiritually. We know that there is more, and we can't quite get to it. This inner knowing is your heart knowing what is truly possible, and that memory is why you feel jammed. We are going to get our freedom. We are going to be set free. They say that we only have a few more days before this bridge is complete. Of course, their days are different from our days. I have learned this the hard way over the years. Their time is different from our time, but for them to say "days" instead of "months or years" is a big thing. This freedom is coming very soon. So, the Andean Masters have sent us this blessing to help us prepare. They have anchored within us a new geometry. They have started anchoring a new direction or path. The Andean Masters will not let us see too much out in the future on this path, because, at this point, we can still mess it up. We would revert back into our 3-D, linear thinking out of habit. So, this shift is going to be a step-by-step and moment by moment process.

The further out that I get out on that path, the more joy and excitement my heart feels. I think we all have that place where we know where we should be, but we haven't quite gotten there yet. If we didn't have this yearning to find this place inside of us, we would never find it, because we would be satisfied and quit searching. But everyone in this group (and those reading this) have come here to be a bridge to a new world. This is why we never quite fit in the world that we were born into, and we never quite fit into the world that we know we belong in. We are always in between, because we are the bridge. This is why we always feel that there is something missing, and thus we keep searching. This deep un-comfortableness, that we only feel as we start to wake up, gives us the gasoline to advance us to the next step.

We will open up the bridge to a new world for everyone else that follows behind us. We know that these others are not really behind us, because we are all going together. This is just a 3D way to explain this. We could not be a bridge to the future without ALL the people around us; those people that cook our food, do our laundry and drive the bus and train. We have all been doing this together. So we want to give thanks to all the people that made this pilgrimage through life possible for us, because they gave us this opportunity to do our job.

When I was doing a lot of sessions, the Star Elders and I started running into places that didn't make sense in this reality. That is because we are already partly on the other side so to speak. We are just now getting little inklings of what is on this other side. It is still very vague, and it is very difficult to describe. I know that the frequency is shifting us anyway. Yet our minds like to know, because we do need to integrate the head with the heart.

This is why we must do what feels right in our hearts no matter what. Our heart is our compass. In each and every moment, there is something that is shifting and changing. The more that we make the heart choice, instead of the head choice, the easier it will be for us to stay on the new path that they just gave us. If we use our heads, this could be a little more uncomfortable, because we will become out of sync with the emerging future. This is why they are working with us today to sync our bodies with our spirits. So, the more that we follow our hearts, the less we will find ourselves in uncomfortable places. If we don't use our hearts, we will move off the new path. Once we move off the new path, we will have to make course corrections. These course corrections can be big and, at times, painful leaps to get back in sync with the new frequencies.

P.S. If you are alive, and in a body, you are shifting. You can't avoid it. There is no stable or constant place right now, except your base camp. We are receiving divine help from the Andean Masters and the Angelic Realms. We have so much divine help helping us to adjust and keep "in time" with what which is coming. They are watching very closely. Our time lines have been out of sync. Our physical timeline has been out of sync with our spiritual timeline, and we have not been able to get it synchronized. This has already self-corrected.

So we want to send thanks to the whole planet, and all living things, for helping us on this journey. It is an exceptional time on the planet. Each living thing has played their part, taught us a lesson, given us a hand, lifted us up, and torn us down. Some have tested us with fear and others with corruption. All beings on this Earth have given us all that we needed to get to this point in our evolution right now. We have passed many tests. Now we can manifest a consciousness that can hold the new geometry which will allow us to build the bridge to the next dimension. We want to thank all the other spiritual groups around the planet that have gathered at this equinox time who are also doing this work. It is going to take many, many villages to get this dimension up and running.

Now just BE who you are. Be your authentic self. Be honorable and impeccable. Follow your heart no matter what the outer world says. Your heart will never steer you wrong . . . but your head will. Your head will get you in all kinds of messes, because it is your 3D programming. But if you listen to your heart, you will stay aligned with your unique path.

P.S. All paths lead to the same destination. There is no way you can get lost. So live bold and with courage to be that one who breaks the old paradigm and frees all living things in the process.

Giving opens up the door to receiving. You have so many opportunities to give every day.

Give kind words. Give a smile. Give appreciation and love. Give compliments. You can give courtesy to other motorists while you are driving. You can give a smile to the car parking attendant. You can give a warm greeting to the newspaper stand person or the person who makes your coffee. You can give by allowing a stranger to go ahead of you into an elevator, and you can give by asking which floor they are going to and pressing the button for them. If someone drops something you can give a helping hand and pick it up for them. You can give warm embraces to those you love. And you can give appreciation and encouragement to everyone.

There are so many opportunities for you to give and thereby open the door to receiving.

If you have a problem with a member of your family who is negative, begin by writing a list of all the things you appreciate about that person. Remember to include gratitude to them for giving you a great desire for positivity in your life; because that is a gift they are giving you. As you focus with all of your strength on appreciation, you will not only reduce your exposure to the negativity, but at the same time you will be attracting positive people into your life.

Get yourself on to the appreciation frequency, and the law of attraction can only surround you with people who are in a positive state.

Restless Legs Syndrome Linked to Fibromyalgia

Today's Daily Health Tip

Restless Legs Syndrome Linked to Fibromyalgia
by Jon Barron

There’s news for people who lie awake in bed at night suffering from restless legs syndrome (RLS). A new study published in the October issue of Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine showed a strong link between RLS and fibromyalgia (FMS). In fact, the overlap of these two conditions is so strong that people with fibromyalgia are 11 times more likely to have RLS than people in the general population.

Both fibromyalgia and restless legs syndrome tend to keep sufferers awake at night. Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by creepy sensations running through the legs and accompanied by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs to get some relief. Individuals affected with the disorder describe the sensations as burning, tugging, or feeling like insects are crawling inside their legs. The sensations range in severity from mere discomfort to considerable pain. In contrast, fibromyalgia is a tricky condition with a varied set of symptoms. Until recently, many in the medical establishment viewed people with the condition as hypochondriacs. As with RLS, the causes are unknown. FMS symptoms include multiple tender areas (muscle and joint pain) on the back of the neck, shoulders, sternum, lower back, hips, shins, elbows, and knees; fatigue; sleep disturbances; body aches; reduced exercise tolerance; and chronic facial muscle pain or aching. About 85 percent of fibromyalgia cases occur in women.

The link between fibromyalgia and RLS was discussed in a Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine study that followed 172 people suffering from fibromyalgia. Of these, 93 percent were female. This group had a mean age of 50. They were compared to a control group of 63 people who did not suffer from pain and fatigue and whose mean age was 41. The researchers found that 33 percent of the fibromyalgia group also had RLS as compared to only 3.1 percent of the control group.

Contributing author Nathaniel F. Watson, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Washington in Seattle, said in a news release, "Sleep disruption is common in fibromyalgia and often difficult to treat. It is apparent from our study that a substantial portion of sleep disruption in fibromyalgia is due to restless legs syndrome."

The medical establishment typically treats RLS with drugs, hoping to improve sleep and thus improve the overall condition of those who also suffer from fibromyalgia. This approach dates back to a study published in 1996, which also found a connection between fibromyalgia and RLS. Back then, the suggested regimen was to prescribe the drugs clonazepam, carbamazepine, or levodopa to get the RLS under control. But these drugs are such side-effect whoppers that if you were diagnosed with RLS in the 90s, you might have been better off suffering with it. The side effects of clonazepam, for example, include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, muscle pain, excessive hair growth or loss, change in sexual desire, weight change, increased saliva production, sore gums, depression, suicidal thoughts and attempts, and other mood disorders. Carbamazepine has caused rare cases of skin reactions so severe that they have been fatal. It has also caused severe reduction in bone marrow function, plus all of the side effects we just listed for clonazepam.

And then there is levodopa. According to Medicinenet.com. "Most patients receiving levodopa-carbidopa experience side effects, but these are usually reversible.

Occasional involuntary movements are the most common of the serious side effects of levodopa-carbidopa therapy. These may include chewing, gnawing, twisting, tongue or mouth movements, head bobbing, or movements of the feet, hands, or shoulder." Sometimes I think doctors should have to take the drugs themselves they prescribe, but don’t get me started on that topic. In any event, it’s hard to justify taking a medicine that stops leg twitching in exchange for gnawing, gnashing, and head bobbing.

The current drugs of choice for RLS are dopaminergics, which act like the neurotransmitter dopamine. One of these is mirapex, which has a list of side effects longer than a twitching leg. Among the many delightful experiences you might have are sleepiness, nausea and vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, chest pain, and compulsive behaviors. If you don’t like how that sounds, there are always the benzodiazepines, which include Valium and Xanax. Or else there are opiates like Darvon and Percodan. Of course, both of these categories are highly addictive. And finally there are the latest and greatest of the anti-convulsants, like Nuerontin and Tegretol. The latter is a carbamazepine which I mentioned above and the former has a long list of side effects that include drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, fatigue, vision changes, weight gain, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, and more rarely suicidal ideation, depression, and on and on.

While RLS causes patients considerable distress, there are more benign and effective approaches to decrease or control the symptoms of this condition. As I’ve reported in the past, RLS is very responsive to dietary and lifestyle changes, detoxification, programs that balance out hormones, and massage and physical therapy. And the side benefit is that the dietary and lifestyle changes and detoxes will also help with fibromyalgia. But it should be noted that FMS is a systemic condition and can’t be effectively dealt with unless you treat it as such.

You might as well ask why anyone would subject him or herself to a side-effect laden pharmaceutical approach? Partly because doctors tend to think like pharmaceutical companies when it comes to conditions like these. They ask, "What drug can I dispense to push these symptoms out of sight?" And as long as doctors think about symptoms rather than about the patients manifesting those symptoms, patients will be advised to try expensive treatments replete with side effects, rather than treatments focused on deep, systemic healing.

I probably should point out that several years ago, my wife, Kristen, developed severe RLS that totally disrupted her sleep patterns. She got significant relief when she added bio-identical estriol crème to her regimen, but it wasn’t until she added a form of deep muscle massage called BioSync that she got complete relief. From the very first session of BioSync she received, she has not had one single further incident of RLS for some five years now. And yes, she continues to get BioSync work approximately once a month. Unfortunately, BioSync is not widely available, but I would guess that any deep muscle work would prove helpful.

The ancient Babylonians practiced a vital law that was the cause of their immense prosperity. They used the tithing law, which involves giving one-tenth of all money or riches that you receive. The tithing law says that you must give to receive, and the Babylonians knew that the practice of this law opens up the flow of abundance. If you are thinking, "I will give when I have enough money," then the tithing law says you will never have enough money, because you have to give first. The poppy has been an international symbol of remembrance since the 19th century Napoleonic Wars, over 110 years before it was adopted by Canada.

In November, Canadians wear scarlet poppies to pay tribute to those who have died in war and military operations. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — the time the Armistice of World War I was signed in 1918 — people across the country are asked to observe two minutes of silence to remember those servicemen and women who have sacrificed their lives.

The poppy has been an international symbol of remembrance since the 19th century Napoleonic Wars, over 110 years before it was adopted by Canada. A record from the time reflects on how the destruction wrought by war transformed bare land into fields of blood-red flowers which grew around the bodies of fallen soldiers.

Scarlet poppies (popaver rhoeas), long known as the corn poppy because it flourished as a weed in grain fields, grew abundantly in the trenches of the war zone. Artillery shells and shrapnel stirred up the earth and exposed the seeds to the light they needed to germinate. While the seeds of the flower can remain dormant for years, they are known to blossom spectacularly once the soil is churned.

The poppy became a lasting memorial o the fallen in Canada and the Commonwealth due largely to Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Medical Officer during the First World War. During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Lt.-Col. McCrae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields when he saw poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle.

While the poppy has become a modern symbol of sacrifice, its legend reaches back thousands of years. The flower has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back 3,000 years. Homer mentions poppies in the Iliad when he compares the head of a dying warrior to that of a hanging poppy flower.

And in ancient Greece, poppies were considered sacred to Hypnos, the god of sleep. Ancient imagery depicts Hypnos with poppies in his hands and crowning his head. The doorway to his temple was also decorated with poppy blossoms. Hypnos was thought to bring prophetic dreams and relief to those suffering from grief or emotional pain.

Ancient Greeks thought that poppies were a sign of fertility. Poppy seeds were thought to induce vitality and strength so Greek athletes were given mixtures of poppy seeds, honey, and wine.

The Romans knew the god Hypnos as Somnus, which is echoed in the flower’s Latin name Papaver somniferum — somnus ferre — bringer of sleep. The poppy was also associated with Thanatos, or Hades the Lord of Dead, and of eternal sleep.

Poppies can also be linked to the Mogul leader, Genghis Khan. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Mogul Emperor led his warriors on campaigns south to India, and west to Russia as far as the Black Sea. According to legend, pure white poppies erupted on churned up battlefields drenched with blood.

(And while Oriental poppies contain opium, the corn poppy, does not. And remember when Dorothy fell asleep in a field of flowers in the Wizard of Oz? The flowers were poppies.)

The first artificial poppies as memorial symbols were distributed in Canada in 1921. Today the volunteer donations from the distribution of millions of poppies are an important source of revenue for the Royal Canadian Legion that goes toward various programs helping ex-servicemen and women.
In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

From poppies to peace: Poem remembers the fallen
Article By: John Macdonald - Aug 05, 2011

Learn the story behind one of Remembrance Day's most famous poems.

Undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous poems, written by a Canadian doctor on a blood-soaked battlefield in war-ravaged Belgium during World War 1, In Flanders Fields has become an international plea for world peace.

Dr. John McCrae had just buried one of his closest friends, killed by a direct hit from a German shell. The friend, Lt. Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, was buried in a crude grave marked by a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies were just beginning to bloom between the crosses marking the many graves.

McCrae had been in the trenches every day for several weeks attending hundreds of wounded and dying soldiers near Ypres, Belgium, in an area traditionally called “Flanders.”

“It was a nightmare,” he wrote his mother. “For 17 days and 17 nights, none of us have had our clothes off… gunfire and rifle fire never ceased.”

McCrae sat in the morning sun on May 3, 1915, outside his makeshift field hospital, listening to the chirping of birds amid the thunder of the guns. He looked over at the nearby cemetery with its rows and rows of crosses amid brightly colored poppies.

Tearing a page out of his dispatcbook, he quickly wrote a short poem of just 15 lines, yet an immortal 15 lines –

In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields, the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

It was printed anonymously on Dec. 8, 1915, in Punch, a leading British magazine. The short but moving poem struck a nerve, and struck a chord with soldiers and civilians alike. Within two years, it had been reprinted throughout the British Empire and the United States, playing a major role in attracting public donations for the war effort through the sale of Victory Bonds.

But McCrae never returned home to enjoy the acclaim. He had suffered much in three years of war, including a poison gas attack which seriously aggravated his asthma. Yet throughout his time, he worked with little rest and under horrendous conditions to care for the wounded.

McCrae died on January 8, 1918, of pneumonia and meningitis in the military hospital at Wimereux, just up the coast from Boulogne, France, and was buried the next day with full military honours in the Wimereux cemetery. A hundred nursing sisters in uniform formed a line at the graveside. One later wrote, “All came as we did, because we loved him so.”

Canadians mourned the death of their soldier/doctor/poet with nation-wide tributes, including a stained-glass window at McGill University with the inscription: “Pathologist, Poet, Soldier, Physician, Man Among Men.”

Famed Canadian writer Stephen Leacock wrote in tribute: “John McCrae’s poem In Flanders Fields will live as long as the memory of the heroic struggle of the Canadians that formed its inspiration.”
Today, while millions know the poem In Flanders Fields, few know anything of the author.

John McCrae was born on Nov. 30, 1872, in Guelph, the second son of a soldier, Lt. Col. David McCrae. Always interested in the military, he joined the Militia field battery in Guelph, commanded by his father. He also attended the University of Toronto and graduated as a medical doctor in 1898 — it was while at university, he developed a flair for writing poetry. McCrae took part in the Boer War, not as a doctor but as an officer in the Guelph contingent of the Canadian Field Artillery.

Following the Boer War, he dropped his military connections and concentrated on medicine, gaining renown for his work in Montreal, lecturing at McGill and other universities, even writing several medical textbooks. When Canada declared war on Germany on Aug. 4, 1914, McCrae was one of the first to join, as brigade-surgeon to the Canadian Forces Artillery with the rank of major.

McRae’s homestead in Guelph, a small stone cottage turned into a museum, sits on a quiet street overlooking the Speed River. In 1966, a group of Guelph citizens purchased the cottage, built in 1857, to honor McCrae’s memory. Today, it’s a small but interesting museum, with several rooms displaying furniture from the year McCrae was born plus historical displays illustrating his life.

This Nov. 30 will be a major event at the homestead as it marks the 125th anniversary of McCrae’s birth.

“November 30 will be a major happening here,” says Val Harrison, program co-ordinator at the Centre. “We’ll be opening a new exhibit on John McCrae’s life and celebrating his birthday with parades and church services. Even a big birthday cake.”

For the past eight years, the Guelph Amateur Radio Club has used the homestead as a base to broadcast during Remembrance Day Week, transmitting messages of peace to thousands of “ham” radio operators around the world. Club members will be sending and receiving messages at the homestead from Nov. 4 to 11. And beside the cottage, a memorial cenotaph and garden of remembrance is the scene of many ceremonies of remembrance by Guelph veterans.

After McCrae’s tragic death in France, Moina Michael, in charge of a New York YWCA hostel, was intrigued by the concept of a poppy as symbol of peace after reading In Flanders Fields and distributed some for people to mark Armistice Day. A friend took her idea back to France and set war widows and orphans to work making artificial poppies to raise funds specifically for war-torn areas.

In 1921, the British Legion picked up the idea and within a year, it had spread to Canada, United States, New Zealand and Australia. And today, that symbol of peace, the poppy, along with McRae’s famous poem, lives on as a reminder of the sacrifices made by armed forces in numerous conflicts throughout the decades.

Giving birth as bombs fall

An unsung hero: the amazing story of one woman's selfless acts of bravery and compassion.

History is not kind to the humble. Stories celebrating selfless acts of bravery and compassion are often never told because the heroes shy away from praise and attention. My mother, Halina Pisarski, was one of these special people.

Her story begins in May 1940, three days after Germany invaded Belgium. My father was off fighting for the British forces. Nine months pregnant and with 8- and 10-year old sons in tow, she boarded a train hoping to reach the relative safety of France.

It took three days for that train to cover 75 kilometres. During the trek there was nothing to eat or drink. What little food she had brought along was quickly exhausted. Things seemed impossibly desperate – and then she went into labour. The train stopped and she found herself stranded somewhere in southern Belgium, near the city of Tournai. How she protected her children from repeated attacks by low-flying aircraft strafing the train with bombs and machine-gun fire is a story in itself.

Now in full labour, she managed to get to a makeshift hospital where she met a young student nurse who helped deliver the baby. And there, in the middle of a war zone, I was born.

My brothers were told to wait outside. In all the confusion, a team of Red Cross workers collecting orphaned or stranded children picked them up and put them in their vehicle. An hour after I was delivered, the bombing became so intense that the building was evacuated. Clothed in only a short hospital gown and wrapped in a sheet, holding her one-hour-old infant close to her, my mother was put in an ambulance with severely wounded soldiers. The ambulance never had a chance to leave.

An explosion ripped off the roof of the vehicle and killed the driver. My mother somehow got out. She grabbed a coat from a dead soldier and rummaged around other dead bodies for handkerchiefs and anything else useful for herself and her newborn.

She was frantic over her missing sons but with no idea where to look and night falling, she took refuge in a barn with several other stranded women. One was a 17-year-old girl who had also just given birth but was unable to breastfeed. Another was a nurse who was caring for a baby whose mother died during childbirth. She too had no milk to feed the infant, so my mother fed all three newborns, one after the other. At night, the women had to stay awake to chase away rats. My mother remained in that barn for a few days in order to regain her strength. She begged at a nearby German army encampment for food for her as well as the other women.

My mother eventually took to the road and started looking for my brothers. She walked from orphanage to orphanage, asking every person she met if they knew where displaced children might have been taken. During the day, when one diaper was soiled, she would rinse it in a puddle of water and hang it on her back to dry. At one point, she took shelter for the night in the entrance of a chapel only to find out in the morning that there had been a sign outside the gated grounds with the warning: “Beware: Mine Field.”

And on she walked. Another night, she came upon a large deserted house. She found her way to one of the bedrooms and collapsed on a bed, completely exhausted from carrying her baby all day under a hot May sun. She had barely fallen asleep when a German soldier arrived and warned her that the house had been requisitioned as a hospital for German soldiers. However, he took pity on us and told her she could spend the night. He even brought her some hot soup to eat. She finally found my brothers at a nunnery and returned home to Brussels.

At this point, I should mention that my mother was Polish, and that she had dark brown eyes and black hair. Even though she had attended university, the only work she could find was cleaning houses. It was wartime and people were wary of foreigners. She was constantly on her guard on her way to and from work because the Gestapo would frequently pick up anyone who looked remotely Jewish.

In 1943, even though I was barely three, I remember the Gestapo coming to our apartment building to take away the Jewish family who lived downstairs. By a stroke of good fortune, the youngest daughter was not at home that evening. A few days later, my mother was approached and asked to take the little girl to Antwerp where a family would hide the child. My mother accepted the mission without hesitation.

I vividly remember how she recounted that story to me. There was a German officer seated on the train across from my mother and the little girl. He kept glancing back and forth between her and the girl. While he was staring, all she could think about was her three-year-old daughter and her now 11- and 13-year-old boys at home alone. They had been strictly instructed not to leave the apartment. She battled slipping into panic. What would happen to them if anything happened to her?

When she arrived in Antwerp, the arrangement called for my mother to sit on a bench with the girl. A woman would come, sit on the other side of the child and my mother would leave. However, my mother was so traumatized by the ride on the train that her legs were frozen in place and incapable of supporting her. Finally as darkness came, she found the strength to get up and board the train back to Brussels.

These were not her only heroic deeds. She sent parcels to that Jewish family in the German work camp even though she barely earned enough to feed herself and her children. I still have the postcards they sent her asking for food and clothing. I remember how she told me that she had had to work one full day to purchase one egg for me! For three long years after I was born, she pumped her breasts every single day and took the excess milk to the Red Cross to feed preemies and newborns whose mothers had died or couldn’t produce breast milk and who could not properly digest cow’s milk. She was given a booklet where they tracked the number of litres of milk she donated! I still have that precious document in my possession. She only stopped when her teeth literally started to disintegrate from lack of calcium. Any cow’s milk she worked so hard to purchase was for us children; she never drank a drop.

There are only two of us left now, a younger brother and I. Who will remember my mother when we are gone? I do not want her name to pass into oblivion after I am no longer here to cherish and honour her memory and her contributions. I decided to contact Plan Canada, an international development and relief organization, I have long been supporting. They set up an Endowment Fund in my mother’s name to keep her memory alive. It is designed so that all the proceeds go toward Plan Canada’s Children of War Fund. I know my mother would be proud of helping children in conflict zones even after her passing. Through this fund, the legacy of her courage and goodness will live on.

I had the privilege of calling this great woman “Maman.” To others, she was simply Halina Pisarski.

Last chance to save Kyoto deal at climate talks

Last chance to save Kyoto deal at climate talks
By Jon Herskovitz and Agnieszka Flak | Reuters

DURBAN (Reuters) - Almost 200 nations began global climate talks on Monday with time running out to save the Kyoto Protocol aimed at cutting the greenhouse gas emissions scientists blame for rising sea levels, intense storms, drought and crop failures.

Poor nations say wealthy countries became rich using coal, oil and gas and that they must be allowed to burn fossil fuels to escape poverty. Rich nations say major developing economies, such as China, India and Brazil, must submit to emissions cuts if the world has any chance of halting dangerous climate change.

The stakes are high. Two U.N. reports this month said greenhouse gases had reached record levels in the atmosphere and a warming world would likely bring more floods, stronger cyclones and more intense droughts.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said global average temperatures could rise by 3-6 degrees Celsius by the end of the century if governments failed to contain emissions, bringing unprecedented destruction as glaciers melt and sea levels rise.

It said an 80 percent rise in global energy demand was set to raise carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions by 70 percent by 2050 and transport emissions were expected to double, due in part to a surge in demand for cars in developing nations.

E.U. climate negotiator Artur Runge-Metzger told a news conference unless progress was made: "(People) will just lose confidence in this travelling circus. How high must the water get in these conference places before the negotiators start deciding?"

Flash flooding from heavy rain killed at least six people in Durban the night before the talks opened.
The Kyoto Protocol commits most developed nations to legally binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The talks in Durban are the last chance to set another round of targets before the first stage of the protocol ends in 2012.

"It may seem impossible, but you can get it done," Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, told delegates.

People participate in the "Walk the Future" event through the streets of Durban November 27, 2011. According to organizers the walk along The Blue Line, a blue line painted on the ground by artist Strijdom van der Merwe, highlights rising sea levels and the challenge of climate change. SMALL STEPS

Diplomats hope there will be some progress on funding to help developing countries most at risk from the effects of global warming, particularly in Africa and small island states.

Rich nations have committed to a goal of providing $100 billion (64.3 billion pounds) a year in climate cash by 2020. But the United States and Saudi Arabia have objected to some aspects of the Green Climate Fund that will help manage it.

There is also a chance that some nations will pledge deeper emissions cuts.

But the debt crisis hitting the euro zone and the United States makes it unlikely those countries will provide more aid or impose new measures that could hurt their growth prospects.

E.U. envoys said they want a new deal for emissions cuts reached by 2015 and in place by 2020, and it will only be effective if major polluters sign on.

Any accord depends on China and the United States, the world's top emitters, agreeing to binding action under a wider deal by 2015, something both have resisted for years.

Russia, Japan and Canada say they will not sign up to a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol unless the biggest emitters do too. The United States, which never ratified the protocol, warned its commitments would be tied to pledges made by major emerging economies.

"The structure of a legal agreement in which we are bound and those economies are not is untenable. It will not solve the problem. It will not be accepted in the United States," U.S. climate envoy Jonathan Pershing said.

Negotiators said there may be a deal struck with a new set of binding targets but only the European Union, New Zealand, Australia, Norway and Switzerland were likely to sign up

The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) said: "If Durban puts off a legally binding agreement and closes the door on raising mitigation ambition before 2020 many of our small island states will be literally and figuratively doomed."

Despite nations' individual emissions-cut pledges and the Kyoto pact, the United Nations, International Energy Agency and others say they are not enough to prevent the planet heating up beyond 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times, a threshold beyond which scientists say the climate risks becoming unstable.

Countries agreed last year in Cancun that deep emissions cuts were needed to hold temperature rises below 2 degrees C.
