Natural Gas disaster
Elgin platform – 150 miles off the coast of Aberdeen
* Total is currently working to stop the blowout, but noted it could take six months to
complete an emergency well to intercept the leak.
* Huge clouds of natural gas have forced the evacuation of several oil rigs in the area
amid fears of an explosion.
* And workers warned there was a “clear and present danger” of a major gas blast.
* A two-mile exclusion zone for shipping and three miles for aircraft have already been
set up around Total’s Elgin platform, which has been leaking since Sunday.
* Specialist engineers from Texas who tackled the devastating BP oil spill in the
Gulf of Mexico in 2010 have been flown in by the company to help stop the leak.
