Becoming a Reiki Master is also about growth. It isn't about being perfect but aiming to become the best version of yourself. I've been reflecting on qualities that make a good Reiki Master, which I explore below.
What makes a good Reiki Master
As we prepare to welcome students onto our Reiki Master course next month, I have been reflecting on what makes a good Reiki Master.
Becoming a Reiki Master is not simply about learning more techniques or reaching the next level of training. It’s about deepening your connection with Reiki, continuing your personal growth, and becoming a clear and compassionate guide and healing channel for others.
Before my Reiki Master training, it all seemed a bit much. I was deeply aware of my many flaws. But I practised Reiki regularly and experienced how it could release stress and gently nudge me into a better way of living. I found myself flowing with life more and fighting it less.
My Reiki Masters did their best to lead by example. They listened without judgment and offered support. They embodied Reiki in their own lives, showing kindness, patience, honesty, and compassion. They understood that their role was not to “fix” others, but to create a safe and supportive space where healing naturally unfolds.
But being human, they sometimes fell short, and that encouraged me to take the plunge and deepen my Reiki journey.
A good Reiki Master understands that the journey is ongoing. They remain open, curious, and willing to learn, recognising that Reiki continues to teach us throughout our lives. Mastery is not about knowing everything; it is about cultivating awareness, humility, and trusting in the wisdom of the energy.
Not all Reiki Masters choose to teach. Many undertake Master training because it deepens their healing practice and supports their own spiritual development.
If you feel called to teach and attune others, it helps to be able to explain Reiki's principles, spiritual path and healing practices in a clear and accessible way. More important than knowledge alone, however, is teaching from the heart—with love, patience and presence.
When I first started teaching, I was terrified but now teaching is the favourite part of my Reiki journey. And Jackie and I will help you feel comfortable about taking that step if that is what you wish to do.
A good Reiki Master honours each person’s individual journey. Every client and student experiences Reiki differently. A good teacher encourages students to develop their own relationship with the energy. They offer guidance, but they also allow space for intuition, personal discovery, and growth.
Another important quality of a Reiki Master is integrity. This means respecting the trust placed in them, holding appropriate boundaries, continuing their own practice, and approaching teaching with care and responsibility. The role of a Master carries a beautiful responsibility — to share Reiki in a way that honours its origins and supports the wellbeing of others.
We love hearing about our students' progress and seeing their confidence grow. We encourage those who feel called to become practitioners or teachers, never seeing them as competitors. They'll attract different clients and students, and our world needs more compassionate practitioners, not fewer.
Our Holy Fire Usui Reiki Master course is an opportunity to deepen your practice, strengthen your connection with Reiki, and explore what it means to step into the role of a teacher and guide. It is a journey of self-development as much as it is a journey of learning.
However, I always advise those interested in learning Reiki to talk to their potential teacher, and sense if you resonate with their energy before you sign up for training.
