Top 10 healthy vegetable and fruit juices - from beetroot to grapefruit

Beetroot juice is the latest vegetable drink to have its health benefits praised, but there are plenty of other super-healthy fruit and vegetable drinks worth adding to your diet - here are our favourites

Beetroot juice has been found to lower blood pressure thanks to high levels of nitrate, that you'd usually only get by eating two whole beetroots or a bowl of lettuce. Adding a glass a day to your diet can help boost your cardiovascular health.

Tomato juice contains lycopene, which gives it its red colour. This antioxidant has been found to help the body's defenses against certain kinds of cancer, including breast and prostate. It's also an effective hangover cure!

Freshly squeezed pineapple juice contains vitamin C for boosting the immune system and also an anti-inflammatory enzyme called bromelain that helps heel bruises and swelling.

Cucumber juice is a very mild tasting vegetable drink. You can mix it with apple or honey for a touch of sweetness if required. It's alkalising, which helps balance your body's pH, and is packed with nutrients including potassium and vitamin A. It also contains sodium making it a healthy way to balance your electrolytes after exercise.

Carrot juice is another wonder drink. It contains beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, which is great for the skin and has antioxidant properties. It's also a good weight loss aid as it's low calorie and has a cleansing effect that helps organs such as the liver detox.

Cranberry juice has long been recommended for those who regularly suffer from urinary infections. It's acidic and helps rid the urinary system of bacteria. Opt for 100 per cent juice versions rather than 'juice drinks' as they contain added sugars

Grapefruit juice is packed wit vitamins and despite tasting tart is actually an alkalising agent, which helps digestion. It has 'fat-burning' properties that make it an ideal diet drink and also helps reduce fatty deposits in vital organs.

NB. Grapefruit juice can affect some medicines so check with your doctor if you're already taking any.

Pomegranate juice was all the rage last year and it's still a great choice for a healthy drink. Like beetroot juice it helps keep your heart healthy as it's thought to reduce cholesterol in the blood and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Mixed vegetable juice allows you to combine ingredients to a flavour you like. If green juices that include kale, spinach and watergress are too bitter for you, try adding berries or bananas, as well as honey to make them more palatable You can also give them an extra healthy boost with additional ingredients such as ginger or wheatgrass.
