Story of Celestite

Story of Celestite

In 1887 Mr. Gustav Heineman emigrated from Baden-Baden in Germany to Put-in-Bay, Ohio. In the following years he established a winery, which is still well-known for its high quality wines today. In 1897 he sank a well beneath his winery and discovered a large vug in 10 m depth. On exploring the cave he found, that much of the cave walls showed extremely large and well developed tabular crystals, which turned out to be strontium sulfate, i.e. almost pure celestite.

The original cave was much smaller than what is shown today, as much of the celestite crystals were mined for the manufacturing of fire-works.

However, Mr. Heineman decided very early to stop the mining activities and turned the property into a tourist attraction called "Crystal Cave". This turned out to be an excellent idea, as the Heineman winery survived the times of prohibiton thanks to tourist guiding through their cave, while other wineries in the vicinity went into bankruptcy.

The Crystal Cave today is open to the public on a daily basis and still displays remarkably well developed, glistening tabular, white to slightly blue crystals of celestite up to 1 m size, whereas the overall size of the cave is about 10 m. They form extensive linings on the limestone walls of the cave. Apparently not much scientific work has been done on the celestite crystal and its formation is still fairly poorly understood. There are some limestone caves nearby, but all of these lack any significant celestite mineralization.

Like all pale-blue stones, celestite relates to communication and creativity. Its special attributes are its ability to enhance peacefulness and mental clarity.

The quality of its peacefulness can best to compare to the feeling we have when we gaze quietly at the sky. It is a feeling of having transcended all earthly cares and of being in communication with spirit.

Celestite helps us to quiet all the circular and repetitive worries which so often fill our mind, whether we are worried about what has happened in the past or anticipating some future unpleasantness. These concerns make it difficult for us to be open to any new ideas and prevent us from being in true communication with ourselves. Celestite helps to calm the over-active mind and teaches us how to be receptive.

When we learn to release expectations, be they positive or negative, we develop a new kind of understanding which is based on trust, rather than on certainty. With this level of trust we are able to stop filtering out information which doesn't agree with what we "know," and learn to receive without judgment new insights.

Because of its peaceful energy, this crystal also helps to cool anger and to relieve tension. In meditation it is most effectively placed on the throat chakra, although you can get some very interesting results by placing it on the third eye.

One cautionary note: this crystal should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Hi there. I ran across some info today about using Celestite to draw out pain.It wasn't one of my crystals so I looked at this. It's really cool. Thanks for sharing that.About 85 miles from here, I was trecking around some 65 million year-old limestone. We found a cave and, much like your story, had crystals all through it.I tried to remove a couple specimens but they crumbled in my hand.I got 1 out though lol I decided not to mess it up and that maybe it was just still here for our affection & appreciation. After my eyes adjusted to the dark cave, the walls seemed to fluoress(sp). These were pointed crystals laying like head up, next one head down and so forth. The rows of these haggleltooth cyrstals frmed large bands all through the walls of Flourite. I wish I had taken pictures. May just have to get some Celestite to keep on hand.
  • I'll have to investigate how to cleanse celestite. I have put it outside in the late afternoon facing the west with no apparent side effects. Can't remember if it doesn't like water too... At least fresh air outside must be okay.

    Appreciate the interesting description.

    • Dear Gaia,

I'm not sure of the best way to cleanse. When I don't know for sure, I aways put them in Sea Salt.Whereas you put them in the driection of the sunset may actually be harming the stone. They're never to be in direct sunlight. It's probably for the same reason we don't put Smoky Quartz or Amethyst in the window sills. It makes them fade. You could always use moonlight.
