Iranian actress sentenced to 90 lashes for film role
Marzieh Vafamehr also given a year in prison for starring in ‘My Tehran for Sale’
It’s a depressing case of life imitating art.
An Iranian actress has been sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in prison for starring in a film that shows artistic repression in the country, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Marzieh Vafamehr was arrested in July and received her sentence at the weekend.
In the 2009 film, ‘My Tehran for Sale’, Vafamehr plays an actress whose work is banned by authorities and is forced to lead a secret life to express herself artistically.
Vafamehr often appears with a shaved head and no headscarf, and there are scenes of drug use in the film, according to Iranian opposition website kalameh.com.

Her lawyer has appealed the sentence, according to reports.
Iranian news agency Fars said the movie, directed by Iranian-Australian Granaz Moussavi, had not been approved for screening in Iran and was being distributed in the country illegally.
However, Adelaide-based production company Cyan Films said the low-budget, independent movie was never meant to be distributed in Iran.

The movie’s producers Kate Croser and Julie Ryan were stunned by the news. They said in a statement: “We would like to express our deep shock and sadness at the sentence.
"We continue to offer our support to Marzieh and her family by respecting their wishes to let the case and the appeal follow the proper legal channels."
They said that Vafamehr’s role was limited to acting and that she had no input behind the scenes.
Australia’s foreign minister Kevin Rudd also expressed “deep concern” at the reports.
"The Australian government condemns the use of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and is deeply concerned by reports that Ms Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to one year in jail and 90 lashes for her role in an Australian-produced film," a spokesman for Rudd told AFP.

Scientists have found the largest-ever virus in water off the coast of South America.
Researchers said the "giant virus", Megavirus chilensis, is "isolated off the coast of Chile".
Like the Mimivirus, previously thought to be the largest, it thrives in freshwater amoebae, single-celled organisms.
It has more than 1,000 genes and its genome is 6.5% larger than the DNA code of the Mimiviru
The Megavirus has the "largest viral genome fully sequenced so far", the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal said.
It is between 10 and 20 times longer than an average virus and is larger than some bacteria, Professor Jean-Michel Claverie from Aix-Marseille University in France told BBC News.
He said: "You don't need an electron microscope to see it - you can see it with an ordinary light microscope."
The scientists found the virus when they were sampling sea water near a marine station in Las Cruces, Chile.

HOTEL KEY CARDS
Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card?
Answer:
a. Customer's name
B. Customer's partial home address
c. Hotel room number
d. Check-in date and out dates
e. Customer's credit card number and expiration date!
When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense.
Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information is electronically 'overwritten' on the card and the previous guest's information is erased in the overwriting process.
But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT!
The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it's illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader.
For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip!
If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card.

I can see it in his eyes
when he comes creeping in.
He's been somewhere he promised me
he'd never go again.
He thinks that I won't know it.
He thinks that I can't tell.
But he forgets how many times
he's put me through this hell.
The deceit is never-ending.
The betrayal . Silly lies.
How can he even sit there
and look me in the eyes?
I've cried so many tears.
I feel so all alone.
He's sitting right beside me,
but he's not really home.
This drug has taken over him.
It's eating up his soul.
It's made his heart so ugly.
Black, like a piece of coal.
I try to stand beside him.
I try to give him love.
I beg him to love me more than it,
but I'm not good enough.
This burden is so heavy.
I cannot tell my friends.
I pray to God to help him.
I pray it someday ends.
Please God hear me praying.

We have a little baby
who thinks he hung the moon.

When I was only two years old,
My daddy went away.
He swore he'd always love me,
But he said he couldn't stay.
Days turned into weeks
And weeks turned into years.
I never saw my father,
He never saw my tears.
He never read me bedtime stories
Or tucked me in at night.
He never showed up for my birthdays,
But I always hoped he might.
He missed my first day of kindergarten
And all of my school plays.
He doesn't know how smart I am,
My report cards full of A's.
Sometimes I want to call him
To say Hey Dad I'm still alive!
I'll be 16 years old soon,
Will you teach me how to drive?
It's almost time for college,
The years go by so fast.
