A habit is something we do on a regular and repeated basis. Habits can be supportive or unsupportive, depending on whether they serve our evolution or hinder our evolution. The Spiritual path is the path out of matter towards Spirit. To evolve, by definition, means to become less matter and more Spirit. As such, supportive habits help us to raise our vibration, they help us to become less matter and more Spirit. They help us to evolve. Unsupportive habits, on the other hand, lower our vibration, they make us denser and coarser. They make us involve.

We are on a Spiritual path, not on a material path. Our goal is evolution, not involution. Our goal is sublimation, not densification.

We live in a world of energies and forces. A habit is a force (!) that forces (!) us to act in a certain way. Energy cannot be destroyed, it can only be transformed. The way to eliminate unsupportive habits is to turn them into supportive ones. The way to get rid of an undesired habit is to replace it with a desired one.

With this understanding in mind, how may we establish habits supportive of our evolution and at the same time eliminate those unsupportive of our Spiritual growth?

1. Before getting started, it is absolutely essential to make a decisive decision about your endeavor. Never start to accomplish anything in an indecisive way. So, step number one is to make sure to launch the habit acquisition and/or transformation endeavor in as decisive and resolute a way as possible. Half-heartedness will get you nowhere.

2. Keep an eye out for opportunities to act out the habit you wish to acquire. Actively look for opportunities!! You have to be active and assertive. Don‘t be passive.

3. Never allow yourself to make an exception until the new habit is firmly established in your life. In other words, you will have to practice the habit you wish to form every single day (!), without interruption, until it actually is a habit. Be sure not to give in „just this once“ because if you do, you are opening a door, energetically speaking, through which the power of your resolution will begin to escape. In other words, if you give in „just this once“ you will soon give in all the time. On the other hand, each time you resist giving in, you are strengthening your resolution. To give in is to weaken yourself, to stay strong in the face of temptation is to strengthen yourself.

4. Be vigilant! It is really important that we be vigilant against the forming of undesirable, unsupportive habits. There may be no great damage in doing a certain thing once or twice, but there may certainly accumulate great damage in the long run if we make that particular undesirable thing into a habit. Vigilance is the name of the game! Be vigilant! And when you are confronted with the question, „Should I do A or should I do B“, just decisively and enthusiastically do that which you want to establish as a habit in your life.

5. Be enthusiastic! As you decide to form a new habit and/or break an old one (by replacing it with a new one), be totally enthusiastic! We live in a world of energies and forces. Enthusiasm (from „enthuse“; en = in; theos = god) is a mighty energy that gives us the power to change the direction of a force away from involution to evolution. Again, think of a habit as a force. That‘s why habits force (!) us to do a certain thing. The easiest way to transform an unsupportive habit or force into a supportive habit or force is to address oneself to the task with the energy of enthusiasm! Feebleness will get you nowhere.

In conclusion, habits are forces (!) that force (!) us to do a certain thing. Unsupportive habits force us to do things that hurt us whereas supportive habits force us to do things that help us. In other words: Habits make us do things automatically. Now, up to a certain point in evolution, there is a great value in establishing supportive habits. They may help us to lift us up (by our own bootstraps), however, sooner or later even the best habit will become a limitation that will need to be transformed again. Why? Because evolution is a never-ending process. Supportive habits help us to reach/„settle“ on a certain level, however, there are infinite rungs up the ladder of evolution, so there is really never a time to settle (for good).

Once we understand that our current purpose of life (=the next rung on the evolutionary ladder) is to change our humanity into divinity, once we understand that our current evolutionary goal in life is to grow into a Soul-conscious species, we should still strive to transform unsupportive habits, however, we should no longer strive to do anything automatically. The goal of the aspiring yogi is to think, feel, speak and act deliberately and purposefully. In other words, the goal of the man and woman aspiring to grow Soul-conscious is not really to establish supportive „habits“, but to take deliberate „initiatives“ to advance on the ladder of evolution.
